Making a Christmas Wreath is not only fun – but you really can get creative with them and make them extremely unique. Here are instructions for making a traditional holly wreath. With these instructions, you will be able to get the basic idea of how wreaths are actually made, and you can then decide what to do to make your own holly wreath special – or go with an entirely different kind of wreath.

Materials:

- A 20 inch wreath – This can be a plain foam wreath, a wreath that already has the evergreens on it, or a twine wreath. For a traditional holly wreath, the ones with the evergreens already attached are ideal.

- 1.5 yards of ribbon – this can be plain red, plain green, or a red and black or red and green plaid. The ribbon should about 2.5 inches wide, and can be silk or felt. It’s your wreath!

- Pine cones – you will need about ten. Try to find ones that are well shaped and unbroken.

- Pomegranates – six dried pomegranates will do. Don’t get fresh ones! Or substitute other dried or good-looking plastic fruits.

- Additional Foliage – you need more evergreens (to make the wreath seem fuller) berry sprays and berry clusters.

- Construction Materials – scissors, hot glue gun, glue sticks, wire (if there is no hanger on the back of the wreath), sewing needle, thread (same color as ribbon).

If the wreath has no hanger, you will need to construct one with the wire. This should be done first. Make sure that it is secure, and that it can bear the weight of the wreath.

Fluff the existing evergreens and add more. The wreath should have a full appearance. You will most likely need to straighten a few branches here and there – but don’t make it too ‘perfect.’ It should have a ‘natural’ appearance to it.

Let’s make and attach the bow. Cut a piece of ribbon about thirty inches long. Cut another piece of ribbon about four inches long. In the center of the long piece of ribbon, you want to form two loops that will make the bow.

The small piece of ribbon is used to secure the bow, in the middle of the loops. Note that the bow is ‘formed’ not ‘tied.’ There are no knots to tie. Secure the small piece of ribbon around the bow, in the back, with the thread. Each end of the bow will be about nine inches long.

You can place the bow wherever you choose to. It could go in the middle of the top, the bottom, or off to one side. The ends should be woven through the foliage on the wreath – or it can hang loose.

It is a good idea to paint the ends of the ribbon with clear fingernail polish to keep them from fraying over time. The bow can be attached to the wreath with glue or with wire. Just make sure that it is secure.

Once you’ve placed the bow on the wreath, you can glue two of the pomegranates in the center of the bow. The remaining four pomegranates should be glued to the wreath equal distances apart, in groups of two.

Next, glue the pine cones to the wreath. These can be spaced evenly apart sporadically, or in groups of pine cones. Do what looks good to you. Again, it is your wreath.

The berry clusters and sprays should also be glued to the front of the wreath. Glue some additional foliage over the top of the bow with a berry cluster for added affect. Remember that there is not specific way that any of this must be done. It is your choice.

It is a good idea to lay the pieces of the wreath on it before gluing anything down. This will allow you to see how the finished product will look before committing to anything. Try different arrangements of the material to see what looks best to you.

Once you’ve constructed the wreath, set it someplace where the glue has time to harden fully. Once this is done, pick the wreath up and gently shake it to make sure that everything is secured well. Most wreaths hang on the door, and doors are constantly opened and closed – and even slammed. You want to make sure that your wreath isn’t falling to pieces each time the door opens and closes.

In many cases, you may be able to use wire or a needle and thread to make items on the wreath more secure. Heavier items won’t be very secure with glue in most cases.

Remember that holly wreaths don’t have to be ‘busy’ to be beautiful. A few simple additions to the foliage is all that it takes.

The bow is typically the object that draws the eye, so make sure that the bow is really well done.

Now that you know how wreaths are made – and how easy it is – you may decide that you don’t want a holly wreath at all. You may opt for a themed wreath, a twined wreath, or a truly unique wreath that stands out. The possibilities are endless!

You really should not spend anything that you cannot afford because you will probably spend all year making up for it. A foam dog bed is much cheaper than one bought in a designer shop. Shops often go to Town at Christmas making a big deal out of it. They know that they can make a lot of money at Christmas. Many shops entice people to buy on impulse and know how to do this.

It is nice to buy gifts for family, but even they will understand if you do not buy a lot for them. Many people do not like it when you spend too much because they know you cannot afford it. Charity shops are great places to shop and sell many new items as well as second hand ones. Not only would you be buying a gift, but you would also be helping charity.

There are other gifts like adopting certain animals and these make lovely gifts. You pay a fee and over the year newsletters are sent out to the adopter. It is especially lovely when it snows as Christmas and everything is white. Looking out of the window onto a snow scene is lovely.

Pantomimes are fun for families to go to. Pantomimes all over the Country are shown where people have fun participating with the show. Competitions are usually plentiful. There is so much to choose from when it comes to gifts. Internet business income is increased as people buy more gifts online.

It is nice to drink wine and be merry at Christmas as long as you do not drink too much. It is better to be safe than sorry and if you drive then do not drink even one alcoholic drink. Crime rates tend to go up at this time of year and do not let yourself add to the statistics. It is good to be silly at Christmas, but also be sensible.

It is not good when people get too drunk and drive. There is a reported rise in crime at Christmas. With drunk driving and other drink related crimes. People sing Christmas songs like Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, Jingle Bells, We Wish You A Merry Christmas and other songs. It is a good time that comes just once a year. Perhaps if Christmas was every day we would get fed up of it, but it is special because it only happens once a year. It is a time that is special for families who can buy fine costume jewelry for one another.

It is good to work at a soup kitchen and help others. There is a feeling of community and serving others who do not have as much as we have. There is a certain atmosphere about Christmas that brings out the humility in mankind.

People usually spend a lot of money at Christmas, but if you can help it don’t spend over your budget. Many people get into debt and there is no need to. If you cannot afford a lot then buy something little. There are no rules that tell you how much money you should spend on a person.

It is very upsetting that another festive season has finished this of course means the reality comes back into play. Walking into work was no easy feat this week and although I love my job I have to say I would rather stay in bed to 11 and just not get dressed all day as well all like to do over the Christmas time. Any New Years resolutions this year? My personal one this year is a bit of decorating and I have to say I do not usually bother. People who are fat are trying to cut back chocolate and go to the gym and people are doing crazy things like eat a different fish everyday of January.

Are these so called resolutions put in place for the entire year or do people just give up after a while, this is a very important question? It is a fact that most of the people with resolutions drop them within the same month of making it and there is an argument to support this. There seem to be more and more people with obesity every single year in Britain and the US? This is only a bit of proof that people cannot cut back on all of that fast food and go to the gym for an hour or two a week!

I received a very nice 46” LED television for Christmas along with a stand and thought to myself, this looks a bit out of place in my room. Well I say it was a gift, the most part of it was bought by myself as a Christmas present to me. So with this new TV in place I decided to decorate my room. My girlfriend kept going on about it and eventually I gave in and thought I would make it my resolution, I do not usually make them.

So my mission for January is to get in some great looking bedroom furniture tear out my old white bedroom furniture and look for some brand new white wardrobes. Sounds like quite a task!

When you think about Christmas you think about Santa Claus and the North Pole, which in turn makes you think of cold weather and snow. This year, however, when you are coming up with Christmas party ideas why not think tropical; think beach. For your tree you can usually find some type of themed lights from your local party store and perhaps you could make leis instead of using tinsel or garland; decorate it with mini sand dollars or shells that you can find at a craft store. When you send out your Christmas party invitations why not include a little sand in the envelope or write the information on a shell or sand dollar? The possibilities are endless.

You might wish to continue your beach Christmas party theme with the food. You can serve it Luau style by placing several blankets on the floor with shells and greenery placed on them as decorations. Because traditional Luau style food may not be readily available you can get by by featuring a pineapple glazed ham.

If you need ideas for Christmas parties for kids, then consider having a Candy Land Christmas with candy cane and lollipop party decorations. The lollipops can be made by cutting out large circles and covering them with colored plastic wrap, attaching them to dowels and placing them around the yard and house. Consider taking gumdrops and stringing them together to use as garland on the tree or other decorations for the party. A cute idea for each party invitation is to write the details on a piece of paper, roll it up like a scroll, cover it with colored plastic wrap, twist the ends and tie them with colorful ribbon or yarn.

To amuse the kids, help them create Christmas party decorations that they can take home, such as a sleigh made of candy. You’ll neeed two candy canes (with the hooked part facing up) for the sleigh, stick a Hershey miniature chocolate bar about 1/4 of the way down over both candy canes and another right in front of it, then taking one more and attaching it upright with the others to look like a seat. Then use a miniature chocolate Santa, put a little adhesive on his feet and fasten him to the spine of the chair. Get a few miniature wrapped Dove bars (they have them wrapped like gifts) and fasten them to the seat like decorated presents.

Other ideas for Christmas parties may include throwing a Christmas “around the world” party, with different food sections to represent different countries. Or another great party theme is to throw a Charlie Brown Christmas with the little tree with one ornament and another one to represent how it looked later. Use your imagination, as the possibilities are endless.

The chief Christmas Holiday Thought that comes to my attention was when my spouse and I were watching the film, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. The setting was the Grinch at the summit of the mountain that overlooked the little town of Whoville, where all the Whos were fast asleep on Christmas Eve. We consider a lot of stories and feelings about Christmas at this point of year, but this one is my choice.

What the Grinch did, was proceed down into the small town of Whoville on Christmas Eve and steal all the toys, trees, tinsel, and anything that was associated with Christmas. He took all the cooking, pudding, and even the roast beast. He packed it all in his sleigh and made his tiny dog pull it back up to the peak of the mountain, where the Grinch lived in separation from the town of Whoville. Then he waited to listen to what he thought would be the noise of crying, moaning, and misery in the air, because he thought he was going to take Christmas that year.

The thing that happened was the biggest Christmas miracle ever. As the snow was falling all around, the Grinch was waiting and listening in silence for that sadness sound. Singing and laughter was what he heard instead. The Grinch thinking and scratched his head, ” why I didn’t steal Christmas, he said. Christmas is not in things like trees, toys, tinsel and food. It’s in the hearts of all those Whos.”

Now the real miracle came next.. The Grinch’s heart grew three sizes that day. Running as fast as he could he ran back down the mountain and put everything , and the Whos elected him as the one to cut up the roast beast.

The moral to the story is, of all the Christmas poems and thoughts, Christmas comes from the heart. It is something that is on the inner recesses that needs to come out. Why is it that, only at the Christmas season, do you hear of upright things that people do to assist others that are less fortunate then they are? Christmas is in the heart of all of us Why don’t you let it come out this year Don’t get fixed up in the trap of trying to buy Christmas with stuff that you don’t have money for.
